A short-term study on how different foods and beverages affect metabolism, blood sugar, and appetite
About
Why this study matters
Are you interested in finding out how your body responds to different foods and beverages? This short-term study assesses your metabolism in the hours immediately after eating and drinking, looking at how different foods affect your metabolic rate, fat burn, blood sugar levels, and appetite.
The study examines how specific components of common foods including polyphenols, complex carbohydrates, and protein influence how we process meals after eating. Understanding these mechanisms could shape future dietary guidelines and help people avoid weight gain and adverse metabolic outcomes such as type 2 diabetes.
All foods and beverages used in this study (e.g. yoghurt, kiwifruit, fruit drink, feijoa extract) are readily available to the public.
Participation
What you'll be asked to do
Initial screening visit
Visit the Human Nutrition Unit in Mt Eden for a ~1-hour screening appointment. We'll measure your weight, height, body composition, and take a fasting blood sample to confirm eligibility.
First study day
A ~5-hour visit where we measure your metabolic rate, blood sugar, and appetite responses before and after consuming one of the test foods or beverages. You'll spend the day relaxed at the unit — bring a book or laptop.
Second study day
Identical format to visit #2, but with a different test food or beverage so we can compare your body's response across products. Scheduled at least one week after the first study day.

FAQ
Common questions
What does a 5-hour study day actually involve?+
You arrive fasted in the morning. We take baseline measurements (metabolic rate, blood glucose, appetite ratings), you consume the test food or beverage, then we repeat measurements at regular intervals over the next several hours. Most of the day you're sitting comfortably — bring something to read or work on. Lunch is provided as part of the protocol.
Why do I have to come fasted?+
To get an accurate "before" measurement we need your body in a baseline state. Eating before the visit would skew your metabolic rate, blood glucose, and appetite readings.
